Leaky Water Heater Disaster? Check Out How We Saved This Festus Home from Water Damage!

March 11, 2025
Dan and Tina Benton

At ABC Environmental Contracting Services, we specialize in water damage restoration, helping homeowners reclaim their homes after unexpected water damage. Recently, we responded to a call from a homeowner in Festus, MO, whose entire home suffered significant water damage from a leaky water heater. The damage was extensive and affected almost every room of their home, including the kitchen, back room, hallway, bathroom, bedroom, living room, laundry room, and even the crawl space. We quickly gathered our team and equipment and were on our way to provide expert water damage restoration in Festus, MO.

A Call From a Homeowner

The homeowner first noticed water pooling in the laundry room and kitchen. Upon further inspection, they realized the hot water tank was leaking and had spread water throughout several areas of the house. As far as they could see, the carpets and kitchen cabinets were wet, and they were worried about the rest of their home. But our team was ready to tackle this water mess and restore the safety and stability of this home.

Recovery From a Leaky Water Heater: The Steps We Took

There was almost no room in this home that didn’t require our attention, so we needed an efficient plan to prevent water from seeping deeper into the structures and avoid further damage. Here’s how our team handled this project:

Step 1: Assessing the Damage

We arrived at the home and inspected every corner of the home to determine the extent of the damage. Using moisture meters and infrared cameras, we identified all affected materials, including carpets, drywall, insulation, and kitchen cabinetry.

Step 2: Water Extraction and Drying

Even though there was no standing water, the moisture needed to be extracted from all surfaces, so we placed air movers and dehumidifiers throughout the home. This was a crucial move to ensure no lingering moisture was left behind. In the crawl space, we removed all wet insulation to prevent mold and further structural damage.

Step 3: Contents and Demolition

To access all water-damaged areas, we carefully relocated items and removed affected materials:

  • Elements: We detached the lower kitchen cabinets and moved them to the garage along with other homeowner’s belongings. And we also removed the washer and dryers from the laundry room for complete access to water-damaged areas.
  • Carpets: Our team removed all carpets to prevent further moisture retention.
  • Flood cuts: We carefully cut out affected drywall in the kitchen, bedroom, hallway, living room, and laundry room.
  • Insulation: We pulled wet insulation from affected areas, including the crawl space.

Step 4: Subfloor Replacement

Water had severely damaged the subfloor in several rooms. We replaced the subfloor in the kitchen, bedroom closet, and water heater room. We also removed the underlayment in the bathroom to ensure all moisture was completely gone.

Step 5: Final Inspection

Once we finished installing the subfloor, we checked the condition of every room one last time to confirm the home was moisture-free and structurally stable. We talked to the homeowner and made sure they were satisfied with the job we did. They were happy to know their home was free of water, all the damage was mitigated, and potential dangers were eliminated.
