3 Effective DIY Ways to Prevent Bathroom Mold – Our Guide

Dec 31, 2019

There are countless reasons for homeowners to hate bathroom mold. For one, it compromises the overall aesthetic of your bathroom. Besides that, bathroom mold is unhygienic and results in a musty aroma that air freshener will never completely eliminate.

If you?re on this page, chances are that you already have a mold problem. Fortunately, we?re here to help you learn how to address it.

The majority of fungi thrive in damp and dark places; hence, your bathroom is the perfect breeding grounds for a mold problem!

Removing mold is challenging. That said, we do have some easy-to-follow techniques that you can use to prevent bathroom mold from forming effectively.

To prevent bathroom mold, you will need the following items:

  • Squeegee
  • Scrub brush
  • Sponge
  • Detergent
  • Bleach
  • Grout sealer

There is one final thing to note before we discuss three ways you can prevent bathroom mold: Given that constant water usage in these rooms results in high moisture levels, bathroom mold is inevitable. The overall key here is to keep your bathroom as dry as possible. You will notice that this principle is present in the advice we have to offer.

Without further ado, let?s move into three easy ways you can prevent bathroom mold!

1. Squeegee Your Bathroom Walls

After a shower or a bath, take a few extra minutes to clean up the bathroom walls.

Get your squeegee and use it to draw the water off the walls. The squeegee helps eliminate moisture that could encourage mold to grow.

If you have tiled walls, you can use a chlorine bleach that is specifically made for bathroom mold. If you?re opposed to using too many chemicals at home, however, you?re in luck?there?s a natural way to do it!

Purchase a bottle of distilled vinegar to put in a spray bottle and spray it on your walls. After you let it sit for half an hour, scrub the walls. Rinse the walls, then repeat this process once more before washing it well.

2. Use a Bath Fan

Invest in a bath fan and run it while you?re taking a shower. When you?re done, leave the bath fan running for at least 30 minutes.

To save you from the hassle of completely forgetting about it afterward, look for one with a timer, so it shuts down automatically.

In the case that you notice that your bath fan isn?t eliminating enough moisture in the bathroom, it?s important to investigate the reason. One common issue with bath fans is that some don?t move enough air. It?s essential to find one that is powerful enough. Look for a bath fan that is best suited to the size of your bathroom to ensure that it keeps your bathroom dry as much as possible.

3. Seal Grout Lines

The third way you can prevent bathroom mold is by using a grout sealer to waterproof your grout lines. One of the best things about this is that this isn?t something you have to do every day. In fact, you will only need to do so once a year!

If you?ve already noticed signs of mold in your bathroom, consider trying one of the following options:

  • Scrub the bathroom mold with the use of water and detergent
  • Prepare a solution using bleach. Mix 10 percent of bleach with 90 percent water and brush or spray it onto the bathroom mold. Let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
