Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis also known as the "New Cathedral" is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. It is located in St. Louis, Missouri. The cathedral was designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1997. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, the current building was completed in 1914 and is the largest cathedral in North America.
The first church on the site was a small chapel built in 1770. The current structure replaced that church and was dedicated in 1914. The cathedral is designed in the Romanesque Revival style with some Byzantine elements. It seats 3,500 people. The bell tower reaches a height of 535 feet (163 meters) and is the second tallest church steeple in the United States.
The cathedral's museum is located on the lower level and includes information about its history, architecture, and artwork. The crypt tour provides a view of the basement with its original columns that are hundreds of years old. Visitors can also see remains of former bishops along with mosaics in the floor when they visit this area. Guided tours are available for individuals and groups.
