The Saint Louis Art Museum is the oldest art museum west of the Mississippi River and has been open to the public since 1903. The art museum resides in Forest Park, a 1,371 acre park near Downtown St. Louis. The building was once an old railroad storage warehouse built by Eads Bridge in 1892. The museum was commissioned by the city for use as an art school, which is now known as the St. Louis Art Institute. It holds over 50,000 pieces of art and has seven different galleries that host traveling exhibits frequently.
There is a lot to see and do at the art museum! The outside of the building is quite attractive. Upon walking in, you will see an escalator and a giant metal statue on your right. This area hosts heavily rotating modern exhibits. As you walk up the escalator, you will enter the main exhibit halls which host classic works from all over the world such as Italian sculptures and Greek pottery. The first room is labeled as the European section and contains mostly sculptures and paintings from Germany, France, and Italy.
The next set exhibits house works from Africa, North America, Oceania (New Zealand/Australia), and South America. The final hallway holds all of the more modern art such as paintings from the 20th and 21st century. This museum also has a gallery devoted to ancient sculptures and drawings from Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
If you are looking to experience a wide range of art from different parts of the world, the Saint Louis Art Museum is a great place to visit. With exhibits that date back to ancient times and others that are more modern, there is something for everyone to appreciate here. The museum is also home to a variety of special collections, making it an even more interesting place to explore.
