Fort Belle Fontaine is about 10 miles from Florissant, Missouri, USA. It sits on the bluffs of the Mississippi River, very near where it meets another major river called Missouri River. The fort was built in 1805 by Zebulon Pike, an explorer for President Thomas Jefferson. Its purpose was to protect St Louis from potential threats that might come down the river, which many Native American tribes did during this time period.
Although it was never attacked, the fort served an important role in training and supply for the military during the War of 1812. The following decades saw a decline in importance until being decommissioned in 1826. It briefly came back into service as a campground during the American Civil War but was decommissioned again in 1868. The land was then donated to the city of St Louis and became a park that is still open today as a recreation center for:
The fort itself has become overgrown with vegetation but visitors can still see the remains of some barracks and other military structures that were built around the fort. Fort Belle Fontaine is located at 1415 North Kingshighway Boulevard St Louis, Missouri 63113. It's open daily from 5am to 11pm.
There are also a lot of amenities in the fort such as:
The fort also has several walking trails that are great for hiking or biking. With views of the Mississippi river and wildlife including deer, wild turkey, ducks, geese, and more it's a great place for nature enthusiasts to visit.
If you are a history fan then Fort Belle Fontaine is the perfect place for you to visit. The Fort was built in 1806 and still is one of St Louis most historic places.
