The General Daniel Bissell House was built between 1812 and 1820 and is an outstanding and early example of the Federal style of architecture in the Missouri Territory. The house is significant for its association with General Daniel Bissell, a prominent lawyer and political figure in early Missouri history.
Daniel Bissell is located almost 7 miles away from Florissant, MO. It was a prominent figure in St. Louis after its establishment as the last French colonial settlement west of the Mississippi River in 1764. Bissell was born in Massachusetts and, despite his Bostonian roots, he settled in St. Louis along with other traders and merchants who were eager to capitalize on the new city's commercial opportunities. As a lawyer, merchant, trader, banker, and politician, Bissell made his mark on St. Louis history during its French colonial period (1764-1804) and the territorial era (1804-21), prior to statehood in 1821.
In 1966, the Federal Government purchased the property from descendants of General Bissell to protect it from any proposed highway expansion that would have damaged or destroyed this historic structure. The farm was then donated to the state of Missouri in 1976, and was opened to the public in 1978.
Today, the house is considered one of the finest remaining examples of French colonial domestic architecture in the country. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
The General Daniel Bissell House served as an inspiration for Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem "The Bird's Nest" inspired by the house's fine sunflower carvings in the late eighteenth century.
