January-Wabash Park is a public park in the city of Florissant, Missouri. The land for January-Wabash Park was donated to the City of Florissant by the Wabash Railroad as a recreational space for its employees and their families. In 1962, local citizens formed a committee that was able to develop funds from a bond issue for the development of a park. In 1993, January-Wabash Park was renamed from Wabash Park to honor two community members who gave their lives in the line of duty: Tomas G. "TJ" January and Daniel M. Wabash.
Today, January-Wabash Park is a popular location for outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, and biking. The amenities of the park include the following playgrounds:
The park is also home to the St. Ferdinand Shrine, a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes in France. The shrine was built by the Knights of Columbus between 1924 and 1927 as a parish fundraiser. Recent additions include accessible fishing piers, bridges for trail crossings, and a stone amphitheater.
The park has been recognized by the state of Missouri for being one of the "Best Outdoor Spots" in 2012 and 2014. Visitors can enjoy various outdoor activities such as picnicking, hiking, bird watching, fishing, boating, and biking. The park also offers a play area for children and a playground with a splash pad. If you wish to visit the park, it is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and parking is free.
January-Wabash is truly a diamond in the rough of St. Louis County Parks and is well worth a trip from anywhere inside or outside of the county.
